Let's ask the governor and the state board of education to allow online/virtual learning as part of the required 180 day-school year.

In a recent letter to parents from our school district, I was shocked to read that the "state does not recognize virtual/online learning as a replacement for the 180-day school year requirement."

I have 2 high school students both receiving and submitting about 90% of their school work digitally through google classroom, and should a catastrophic event occur to our community where they would need to miss school, there is no allowance made for any virtual or online learning towards that 180-day school year requirement!

Sure, right now I'm worried about the Coronavirus, but should the 180-day school year requirement be standing in the way of our decision-makers choosing to err on the side of caution?

I get it, closing school is a big decision, and it opens up a whole bunch of other issues.

This isn't about any of those issues.

This isn't about whether or not the school should be closed.

This is about... if the schools need to close... why not let the school districts prepare a virtual/online program that will count towards the 180-day school requirement.

I propose we ask the state board of education to allow local school districts to prepare access to virtual/online learning programs that will count towards the 180 day school year requirement, should the schools be closed for any days that were not otherwise already accounted for in their 180-day school year requirement.
