We are asking for your help! Each signature matters.

On March 21, 2020 Governor Phil Murphy signed Executive Order No. 107 directing all residents to stay at home in order to contain the spread of COVID-19. The “stay-at-home” order lists businesses that were deemed essential and may stay open. Thankfully, pet stores are deemed essential. However, pet grooming is not.

While we are already taking important measures necessary to protect the most vulnerable members of our society, we are asking for your help to ensure that our community has the ability to provide continued humane care for our pets during COVID-19. We ask that you help us list pet grooming as an essential service that is exempt from the mandatory closure during this time.

Regular grooming is necessary to maintain a pet’s coat and skin healthy and clean. Properly bathing and blow drying helps rid of dirt, debris and de-matt. Brushing and combing your pup on a regular basis will help with shedding, stimulate capillarities, bring out natural oils, remove dead hair/dirt/dandruff and prevent matting of hair. Trimming your pet’s nails regularly promotes healthy foot structure, posture and joints, preventing both orthopedic and soft tissue injuries

Pet grooming is not a simplistic vanity issue and is essential to ensure the well-being of our beloved pets. During a grooming session, a groomer may find possible signs of illnesses that the pet’s family may not have noticed. Pets can contract various conditions which may lead to serious health consequences due to lack of grooming. Such conditions may include bacterial and fungal infections, parasitic infections or infestations. It is important to note that some of these infections/infestations may be zoonotic (pose a threat to human health). As per ASPCA: “But for dogs and cats, proper hair hygiene is essential; failure to groom pets regularly can have serious health consequences... Severe hair mats can grow so tightly that they can restrict or cut off blood circulation, which can eventually require amputation”.

Additionally, lack of grooming may pose a threat to human health. Humans can be afflicted by serious tick-borne pathogens- Lyme disease, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, anaplasmosis; flea bites ringworm and other fungal infections; intestinal parasites that can be passed on from their pets.

Also, pet grooming is not a task for those who are unexperienced grooming and handling pets. Serious accidents may occur including burns, punctures and lacerations which will be painful, traumatizing and even life threatening to your pet. The person handling the animal may also get bit, cut and hurt in the process if their pet is not used to at-home grooming.

Lastly if pet grooming is deemed essential, shops will need to abide by the CDC's recommendations and follow the social distancing protocol to help flatten the curve. A few suggestions would be to offer curbside valet assistance for pets pick up/drop off, accept electronic payments only, wear masks/gloves and disinfect all high touch surfaces. If team members feel COVID-19 symptoms they should be instructed to stay home. Similarly, clients should be asked to reschedule their appointment.

Your signature will help us communicate this important request. Thank you for your time and please help us spread the word.
