March 16th, 2020 was the last day of school for us in New Jersey. We were expected to be back in school sometime in April, and then again by May 15th. New Jersey schools are now been closed for the rest of the year, and we are still expected to be completing online work for all classes. A majority of us are still kids, minors, who are living through a global pandemic, a traumatic event in our lives, and many of us are grieving and losing people during this time. We are all going through our hardships at home, whether it be guardians who are busy, families who are struggling to make ends meet, dysfunctional homes that aren't safe, or the students who have mental illness and are finding it impossible to complete even one piece of work a day, despite the help they are receiving or being offered.

The fact that we aren't being automatically passed for the fourth marking period is beyond me and many others. It's a huge injustice on our part. New Jersey has the second highest death toll due to COVID-19 and our teachers continue to expect a steady flow of work being turned in almost everyday. Even for students who can receive extra time, it feels like nothing. Do not speak over those who are suffering right now. We need this to stop now before kids get held back for being unable to do schoolwork that is absolutely not relevant right now.
