Did you know? The Philippines ranks as the world’s third-biggest polluter, with 2.7 million of plastic waste generated each year and at least 20% are generally dumped into the ocean? Did you also know that people consume about 300 million plastic every year without proper disposal? The prolonged closure of plastic pollution is mainly attributed to inadequate waste management, lack of responsibility of companies, manufacturers, and failure to reduce waste by lessening consumption, and no alternative plan for an improvised package design. The country was struggling with unsustainable plastic consumption and waste management.
According to WWF, plastic pollution is expected to increase by 40% or an additional 104 million metric tons of plastic waste by 2030. By 2050, solid waste at the municipal level will increase by 70% – a spike that will shape people's living conditions.
The report has said that at least 386,000 tons of plastic waste were leaked into the ocean every year due to unloading trucks of plastic onto the bodies of water as this is their proper location to dispose of the waste of manufactures and other industries.
Plastic pollution does not only threatens the human quality of life but also threatens animals and plants through toxic pollutants. The marine environment is probably the most affected such as the health of the ocean and the quality of life and food for the fish and other sea creatures.
Millions of animals are killed by plastics every year, from birds to fish to other marine organisms. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by plastics. Nearly every species of seabird eats plastics. Most of the deaths of animals are caused by entanglement or starvation.
The government was unwilling to control the management of waste all over the country and letting us throw away all our trashes in the surroundings. Although as consumers, we are also irresponsible upon overusing plastic products since these are mostly provided packaging products from our local retail stores even though other people disregard to use reusable eco-bags that are now available on the market. However, by re-considering the facts and the lack of managing plastic waste nowadays, we’re not just doing this for our environment, but also our health conditions. Clean surroundings provide a clear mindset and a clean healthy body. Without the support from the government and you, we could not find ways to find and propose contingency plans that could support the creation of sustainable alternative products that are eco-friendly and promote our environmental acts around the world. If you sign this petition, the small act of kindness you have made towards the environment will be multiplied by millions of people, that can transform the entire world.
