Watching football is an extremely intense experience, and animosity towards referees is commonplace both in stadiums and in homes. Many supporters can feel anger, rage, and powerlessness when they believe their team has been wronged by bad referee decisions.

In order to improve the relationship between referees and the public, as well as accountability and transparency in the decision process, a live audio feed of all referee communication must be made available by the Football Association (the FA) and the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL).

This simple move will improve the standards of refereeing, further reduce bias of referees, and soften the rift that has built between supporters and referees.

Furthermore, the introduction of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) in the refereeing arsenal of match officials has brought even more possibilities for controversy. Some incidents are reviewed, while others virtually identical are not, and often during the same game. Letting supporters hear the conversation between pitch officials and VAR room officials is necessary to build trust and transparency.

These changes will most certainly not have any negative effects and Rugby can be the reference - a sport where respect for referees is higher than in Football, where incredible outbursts against referees are less commonplace.

Referees are third party arbitrators whose sole purpose is to ensure equitable treatment between teams in the face of the game's rules. They should have no bias, nor should they ever be the center of attention. In fact, a perfect referee would simply not be discussed - a shadow ensuring the rules are respected by each team

It is quite clear to anyone watching the Premier League that controversial errors are now commonplace, and that referees do not appear as unbiased third party arbitrators. Most supporters, whether justified or not, despise certain referees as they believe they're systematically treated harshly.

The Football Association and the PGMOL must make live referee communication available FOR ALL the public.
