The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented event and has drastically impacted our communities and families. While the number of cases in Texas continues to increase, Governor Abbott and the Texas Education Agency have stated that schools will reopen in the fall. In response to the Governor’s announcement, Pflugerville ISD created a task force to develop a reopening plan for the Fall 2020 school semester. However, Pflugerville ISD neglected to include one of its most important constituency groups in the task force - parents and families.

By not including representatives from the families of Pflugerville students, PfISD is endangering the health and safety of students, educators, and parents/guardians. PfISD cannot create a comprehensive plan to reopen schools without families represented on the task force. Furthermore, Pflugerville ISD has not proactively reached out to low-income families and communities of color to address the needs and concerns of these constituents.

Pflugerville ISD must rectify this issue and give families a voice in planning the reopening and determining when it is safe for our students and educators to return to school. We, the undersigned, call on Pflugerville ISD to agree to the following demands:

1. Include parent representatives that reflect the demographic make-up of the district on the reopening task force; especially on the safety and health subcommittee and the digital learning subcommittee.

2. Create a mechanism by which parents, students, and educators can approve or disapprove of the task force’s recommendations before schools reopen.

Pflugerville ISD must respect the people who are most important to the life of our schools: families and educators. If parents are not included in the district’s plan to reopen our schools, then the plans are insufficient, and we must reject them.
