Gavin is a 6 year old from Ramsey, MN. He was a healthy, active boy until April of 2012. Gavin's eyes seemed to be watery and he had trouble looking up for a couple days. On Saturday April 7th, at his sisters birthday party, his family's worst nightmare became their reality. After a family doctor looked at Gavin, she said he needed to be brought to Children's hospital. Within hours, they were told that Gavin had a brain tumor. Gavin has spent the past 9 months having chemo, and multiple surgeries to gradually reduce the tumor. Gavin is scheduled to have his 5th surgery within this next week.
His doctors are treating him with an Interferon treatment to reduce the growth of the tumor so that they can remove it fully. The doctor stated that unless something changed he does not think he could entirely remove all of the tumor. One of the doctors is trying really hard to get the drug CDK as a back-up if the Interferon doesn't work. CDK has been used in Gavin's type of tumor in clinical trials with adults but not yet in children. If the tumor could be shrunk, it could become completely resectable.
The family has been confronted about the severe risks associated with continued surgeries and told that the alternative would be to discontinue surgeries. Gavin would deteriorate, lose motor function, and pass away in a few months.
Gavin's family is devastated but absolutely won't give up. Pfizer wouldn't give the drug for his treatment last year. They're hoping that Pfizer will reconsider their making CDK available for Gavin as it appears to be their only hope at this point.
