Due to the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic many people will be off work for extended times with quarantines or illnesses lasting weeks.  To help those affected by the time off work and resulting loss of income the U.S. Congress passed the FFCRA (Families First Coronavirus Response Act, followed by the CARES Act.

They allow in part:
80 hours of paid job protected sick leave for two weeks for full time employees.  Part time employees get coverage too based on the number of hours worked.  While this time off is not able to be carried over year to year, it is in addition to any time off normally given by an employer.  Additionally, normally accrued time off cannot be forced to be used first.  Other benefits are also included such as partial payment for caring for family members suffering from COVID-19 infections, etc.

Unfortunately healthcare workers are EXEMPT from receiving any of the benefits offered to much of the rest of the country.  This is unacceptable.  While it may be understandable that not all provisions of the time off  provisions may be suitable for healthcare workers, such as paid extended time of to care for family members since their skills are so critically needed, they deserve the same paid time off to recover from the illness or to have paid time off time in quarantine as the rest those it has been offered to.  This is especially true during a time when we are expecting so much from our healthcare workers with very limited personal protection equipment to reduce their chance of becoming infected.  This only adds to a constantly changing and evolving environment adding extra stress to an already stressful situation.

Please consider signing the petition and reaching out to your elected officials asking them to change the provisions to include healthcare workers in the paid time off that will not count against their normal benefit time if related to the current COVID-19 pandemic as outlined in the FFCRA and CARES Act.
