Petition to the Borough of Runnemede: Assume Maintenance of Trees Along Black Horse Pike

Petition to the Borough of Runnemede: Assume Maintenance of Trees Along Black Horse Pike
The Issue
Dear Fellow Residents and Business Owners,
As a third-generation resident of Runnemede and a dedicated local business owner, I have always been proud to call this town my home. The Black Horse Pike is not just a business corridor for us; it is a symbol of our community’s vibrancy and history. However, the current state of tree maintenance along this vital street has become a matter of concern for many of us.
Background: During the recent "Ask the Mayor" night hosted by the Runnemede Chamber of Commerce, the condition of the trees along the Black Horse Pike was a significant topic of discussion. The Borough maintains that property owners along the Black Horse Pike are responsible for tree care and maintenance. In contrast, since most of the local businesses did not plant the trees, they believe that the town should maintain the trees planted between the sidewalk and the curb lining the Black Horse Pike. Most are simply unaware of who is responsible. This disagreement has resulted in neglected trees, affecting the safety and appearance of our beloved Runnemede.
Concerns:
Safety Hazards: Dead and overgrown trees pose significant risks to motorists and pedestrians.
Aesthetic Impact: Overgrown trees obscure our businesses, and the absence of trees where they have been removed affects the visual integrity of our main street.
Community Well-being: Properly maintained trees can enhance the beauty and appeal of our community, fostering a sense of pride among residents and attracting visitors.
Call to Action: We urge the Borough of Runnemede to assume responsibility for the maintenance of trees along the Black Horse Pike. This includes regular care, trimming, replenishment, and replanting where necessary. The benefits extend beyond mere appearance:
Environmental Benefits: Proper urban tree cover can reduce energy costs, improve air quality, and increase property values (USDA, 2020).
Community Pride: Well-maintained trees enhance the overall look of our community, making it a more inviting place for residents and visitors alike.
Your Support: By signing this petition, you are supporting a safer, more beautiful, and vibrant Runnemede. Together, we can bring about the change that benefits all of us and restores the visual integrity of our main street.
Thank you for your support in making Runnemede a better place for all.
Sincerely,
J. Kenneth Leap
