( My apologies - I did not know before hand that change.org would ask petition signers if they want to donate money. If I had I would not have used this website for a petition. I'm not seeking money through this petition, merely expression of support to save what's left of the Historic Welland Canals. So if you are supportive enough to sign this petition, when change.org asks if you want to donate, fortunately there is the option to simply click on 'cannot at this time' Please choose that option, thank you.)

The year 2029 will be the 200th Anniversary of the official opening in 1829 of Canada's 1st of four Welland Canals that Canadians built between Great Lakes Ontario and Erie. Canada's 4th Welland Canal officially opened in 1932 carries on that legacy to this day.

2029 is only 11 years from now. 2029 is fast approaching.

Parts of the Historic Welland Canals 1, 2, and 3 still exist, but are deliberately being allowed to crumble into dust, or not wait for the sands of time, heiniously bulldozed. The lands where the remnants are has been and still is being sold off to developers, part by part.

In 2029 what will we Canadians say to each other, to ourselves, to our children, our grandchildren, to future generations of Canadians, to the rest of the world ?

We failed to save any of the infrastructure of the Historic Welland Canals 1, 2, and 3 ?

Or,

We saved and preserved as much as we could for all Canadians, and the world, to honour, respect, and celebrate in 2029, and into the future.

If we want to be able to say the latter, we absolutely HAVE to start now. Now is the very last chance. All too soon there will be nothing left to save.

Please sign this petition to express your support for saving, preserving what is left of Canada's Historic Welland Canals 1, 2, and 3, and thus finally, deservedly, and for all time, honouring the Canadians who built them, those who died building them, and the many more who worked and maintained and sailed through them.

Why is it important that we do it ?

In 1829, a scant 14 years after winning the War of 1812 against invading Americans, Canadians had built and opened the 1st of four Welland Canals constructed between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie through Canada's Niagara Region for water power generation for industries, farms, and people; for military defence; and the passage of ships of commerce past Niagara Falls and the Niagara Escarpment, to and from all the Great Lakes, and beyond. The 1st Welland Canal was truly a monumental achievement for all Canadians to be proud of.

Tens of 1,000s of Canadians did what was called by almost everybody - the impossible. Yet, those Canadians did it - the impossible - not once, not twice, nor even three times. They did it FOUR times, to make each replacement Canal better than the one before.

Hundreds lost their lives during the constructions. Millions of Canadians, and millions more around the world, benefitted and owed their lives to the Welland Canals, and continue to because of Canada's 4th Welland Canal.

All four Welland Canals were very deservedly hailed as World Status Engineering Marvels. Canals 1, 2, and 3 were essential foundations for Canada's evolution from the beginning to Nationhood, and since 1932 the 4th Welland Canal carries on that legacy. Canada, all Canadians, owe Canada's existence today to the four Welland Canals.

And, seriously consider the following environmental benefits:

2.1 million tons of cargo transitting Canada's 4th Wellanad Canal by ship takes approximately 54,000 forty-ton trucks off already congested roads and highways. In fact, one ton of freight can travel 240 kilometers on a single litre of fuel by ship, whereas it can only travel 30 kilometers on the same amount of fuel by truck.

Since 1959, more than 2.5 billion tonnes of cargo estimated over $375 billion have moved to and from Canada, the United States, and nearly fifty other nations.

Tragically, our shame today is, Canadians have so far failed to even know about let alone respect, honour, preserve the historic legacy of Canada's Historic Welland Canals 1, 2, and 3, and the continuing of their legacy through the current 4th Welland Canal.

This is happening despite the well documented fact that properly preserved history returns at least more than and up to $ 16 from economic and tourism revenues for every dollar spent to achieve that goal.

Building the 4 Welland Canals was each time decreed as impossible. Canadians did the impossible four times anyways.

Defeating the Developers is decried as impossible.

We CAN do that impossible too.

Like our Canadian ancestors who built the 'impossible' 4 Welland Canals lets do the 'impossible' again as our answer to saving what's left of Canada's Historic Welland Canals 1, 2, and 3.

Please sign this petition to express your support for saving, preserving what is left of Canada's Historic Welland Canals 1, 2, and 3, and thus finally, deservedly, and for all time, honouring the Canadians who built them, those who died building them, and the many more who worked and maintained and sailed through them.
