Petition to Save the Wildwood Community

We, the residents, property owners, and friends of the Wildwood Community consisting of all of Hull Swamp to the west and north to the Wildwood Cemetery and then South to Highway 70 adamantly oppose the Bridges Street Extension Project (NC Department of Transportation Project STIP R5727), where the 110-wide right away and road would divide our community, obliterate homes and property, bring pollution and noise, and destroy critical natural habitat.
Wildwood is a very old and proud community that was established in 1867. At one time we had stores, a train depot, post office (1883-1971), and until recently our own volunteer fire department. Of course, the heart and soul of our community has been our historic Wildwood Presbyterian Church which was founded and built in 1894 and the accompanying cemetery where most of our family and relatives are buried.
The small fields were where we raised our gardens and crops and at one time held several tobacco allotments where most of us helped each other harvest each late summer. Hull Swamp, often commonly referred to as “Wildwood Creek” or just the “creek” was where we have continued to fish, hunt, and explore for 150 years. This area is rich with natural beauty and includes extensive wetlands. It is home to many species of hawks, owls, woodpeckers, and other wildlife.
Many of us went away, some of us came back, and many come back for reunions or to be with our relatives or maybe to attend church, or just to enjoy the peace and quiet, but all of us love and want to protect Wildwood. Putting Bridges Street Extension through our neighborhood would destroy what we love.
We the undersigned urge you to find another route and to protect our Wildwood Community:
