SAVE TAKAPUNA BOARDWALK

The Boardwalk from The Promenade to the north end of Takapuna beach was built 20 years ago to give safe dry access to the beach during high tides.

As agreed with Mana Whenua when it was first consented, the Boardwalk has the dual purpose of constraining access in accordance with the sacredness these trees represent to Maori, while protecting the roots and undergrowth underneath.

Due to lack of maintenance the Boardwalk has fallen into disrepair and was closed by Auckland Council two years ago. Council also failed to manage the trees -  resulting in a health and safety risk not only to users of the boardwalk, but to people walking the beach.

Council are now proposing to dismantle the boardwalk from the lookout, at a cost in excess of $800,000; and to carry out work on the seawall at a cost in excess of $250,000. This would eliminate access into the Sacred Grove.  The planned work is a waste of ratepayer money and contrary to the needs of the community and Iwi.

We petition Council to carry out required repairs and maintenance on the boardwalk and make overhanging trees safe. Further to put in place a regular maintenance programme so the boardwalk does not fall into disrepair, and that cares for the welfare of the Sacred Grove.
