Petition to remove GWPD from SRR conduct violation proceedings
This is a demand to the George Washington University to remove GWPD from all SRR conduct violation proceedings and to culturally train and evaluate their misconduct board. GW should not criminalize and police individuals as they begin their college careers.
The story:
I am an international student on emergency housing and aid due to the consequences my family endured from the pandemic. My financial troubles left me homeless for the first month of school and surviving off the student pantry. I was lucky to have a professor take an interest in me which led to my emergency housing, however, I was on the verge of dropping out of school in my third year.
My white roommate called the cops on me for having my boyfriend over after she had consented to it. She moved out the next day with no explanation. I was consequently raided by GWPD and was charged with 5 violations related to drug paraphernalia 2 days later. As a 21-year-old woman, I was legally in possession of everything that was found within the District of Columbia. However, given GW’s own criminal code, I am now facing a permanent record. I was not informed about the raid until 24 hours later, leaving me to believe I was robbed for an entire day. As a student of color, I was scared. I didn't know what to make of what happened. To find out it was the police that came in unannounced and removed property from my room was even more unsettling. When I tried getting any information from the school, I was shut down in an effort to protect the privacy of my white roommate who reported me in the first place. I confronted her over text and got immediately blocked. When I finally saw my ex-roommate in the elevator, I confronted her and asked her how she felt about compromising my visa? She couldn't look me in the eye and told me to leave her alone, so I left. To my surprise, she reported me again after that, but this time on the basis of harassment. I was therefore slapped with a 6th charge regarding disorderly conduct on the basis of harassment, threatening, and endangering her life. A white American student criminalized me and was allowed to weaponize GWPD under SRR against me.
