Our Petition
We call for the relaunch of the African Reparations Movement (ARM) and for the Bernie Grant Arts Centre to become an internationally recognised centre dedicated to advancing reparatory justice through research, education, technology, public engagement and international collaboration.
The international movement for reparatory justice continues to grow across Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, North America, South America and within international organisations. Governments, universities, researchers, museums, community organisations and legal experts are increasingly examining the continuing consequences of slavery, colonialism and their lasting social, economic and institutional impacts.
We believe the time has come not only to continue the conversation, but also to build the institutions needed to support it.
The African Reparations Movement, inspired by the work of Bernie Grant, helped place reparations firmly within public debate. We believe that mission should now be renewed for the twenty-first century using modern technology, international partnerships and practical infrastructure.
Our long-term vision is to establish the Bernie Grant Arts Centre as the International Centre for Reparatory Justice.
The Centre would provide a permanent home for:
Research.
Education.
Conferences.
Public engagement.
Historical archives.
Policy development.
International collaboration.
Technology supporting reparatory justice.
Building Practical Infrastructure
Campaigns raise awareness.
Institutions create lasting change.
We therefore propose the development of a Reparations Infrastructure Platform to support the global reparations movement.
The Platform is intended to provide practical infrastructure capable of supporting:
Research.
Education.
Digital identity.
Evidence management.
Historical documentation.
Knowledge sharing.
International collaboration.
Community participation.
Artificial intelligence research tools.
Public engagement.
Our objective is not to replace existing organisations.
Our objective is to build infrastructure that strengthens them.
Why the Bernie Grant Arts Centre?
Bernie Grant devoted much of his public life to advancing reparatory justice.
We believe his legacy deserves a permanent institutional home capable of serving future generations.
The Bernie Grant Arts Centre has the potential to become far more than a local arts venue.
It can become an internationally recognised centre where researchers, governments, universities, community organisations, legal practitioners, educators, technologists and citizens work together to advance reparatory justice through practical cooperation.
Our Long-Term Vision
Our ambition is to build one of the world's leading centres dedicated to reparatory justice.
Over time we seek to develop:
International research programmes.
Educational resources.
Digital libraries.
Conferences.
Policy publications.
Public exhibitions.
Historical archives.
Community engagement programmes.
