Why this petition matters

The sex workers have always donated their money and the soil from their yards which is considered as auspicious, for the making of the Durga idols. But when it comes to witnessing and participating in these festivities, they are humiliated, berated, called impure, and are never welcomed. The very law that promises it holds their best interest at heart, regretfully denies them of simply being included in the festivities, as held in the Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee v. State of Bengal case.

During the month of Ramadan, when these women wish to participate in the festivities and celebrate Eid, the society throws in the social construct of “purity” and subjects them to harsh words. The police and other authorities which are in place to protect the citizens from injustice are the ones subjecting them to physical harm.

The Constitution of India grants the fundamental right to equality to all its citizens. Yet we see rampant segregation and bigotry practiced against the sex workers of India.

Through this petition, we hope to:

help bring justice to the sex workers of India who only want to revel in their faith.
Initiate conversations around sex workers and their individual rights
Destigmatise sex work as a profession.

We seek your support to help draw attention to this issue and in the process.

Please sign this petition and share it with as many people as possible to help a marginalized section of society live a dignified and happy life.
