Mayor Muriel Bowser

1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW #406

Washington, DC 20004

Dear Mayor Bowser:

As parents at Maury Elementary and Eliot-Hine Middle School, we need to know that our children, faculty, and staff are not at risk of harmful exposures to contaminants in school during the modernization process.

We ask for these measures at Maury’s temporary site and at Eliot-Hine Middle School at 1830 Constitution Avenue:

  • Conduct monthly water testing during construction
  • Conduct continuous air monitoring of diesel particulates during the school day from 7am-6pm while construction is ongoing
  • Check all HVAC filters monthly and change filters as needed during construction

We ask for these measures at the permanent Maury School Site at 1250 Constitution Avenue:

  • Provide the DDOE lead abatement certification of clearance and abatement details (where and how) for abatement of the historic building completed in 2011. (We have thus far been told that this information cannot be found.)
  • Assess any portions of the historic building where lead-based paint still exists and provide results.
  • Provide confirmation that contractors are now following lead-safe work practices and ensure that adequate containment and cleanup will occur going forward.
  • Fully assess plumbing, replace any internal lead plumbing or fixtures, and provide safe drinking water fountains in Maury’s historic building.
  • As soon as available and prior to staff and student occupancy, provide the schedule and results of testing for indoor and outdoor air quality, outdoor play space, asbestos, lead dust, and lead in water to the school community.
  • Provide regularly scheduled testing and results of indoor and outdoor air contaminants including asbestos, lead, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), mold, and formaldehyde.

We will appreciate hearing from the Mayor regarding your plans to address these proposed actions.

Sincerely,

Maury Elementary and Eliot-Hine Middle School Communities
