Why this petition matters

Started by Azia J

Many of us find ourselves on-campus, hungry, and without viable food options that suit our budgetary or dietary wants and needs. Food-insecurity is an issue on many college campuses- including our very own, and especially affects students who are low-income, have dietary restrictions, live in traditional residence dorms, and more. These students also tend to have limited access to staple food items or kitchen appliances to make the meals they need.

The improvement of our current community kitchens in Moore Hall, Campus Ministry, and in select residence halls, as well as the addition of more can, help combat food-insecurity on our campus and give students access to the nutrition they need to improve their health, happiness, performance in school, and overall wellbeing.

I am proposing the addition of at least four more community kitchens on campus so that each non-apartment Residence Hall is equipped with a full kitchen including a refrigerator, stove, oven, and microwave. Additionally, I am calling for our current community kitchens to be renovated and improved to ensure that they are equipped with basic kitchenware and appliances and basic staple foods such as bread, rice, pasta, fresh produce, eggs, cereal, milk, coffee, and tea.

If you would like to support this cause, please sign the petition and feel free to write a note! This petition is one part of my project in PSP 303: Community Organizing to address food insecurity on campus. If you’d like to learn more about other food security initiatives on campus or be a part of the leadership team, please feel free to reach out to me.
