Petition to Enforce Faculty Responsibility to Provide Timely Grading & Feedback KINS 158
Why this petition matters
If you are currently enrolled in Dr. Brown’s KINS 158 ( Motor Control and Learning) course please read the following and consider signing the petition:
From the beginning of the Fall 2022 semester, Dr. Brown has been painstakingly slow to grade assignments, especially in his lab sections including but not limited to “ Group Project Rough Draft” and all Lab Report assignments. The week of 11/10 Dr. Brown stated that he would work on entering grades as he was admittedly behind. As of the last day of instruction, 12/9/22, students still had little to no idea of where their final grade would fall due to the majority of lab reports, which make 39% of the final grade had not been entered.
This has not only caused undue stress on students, but we believe these actions to not only be professional but to also violate the responsibilities of faculty members as outlined in the “Faculty Responsibility and Professional Ethics” and “Faculty Responsibilities to Students in the Instructional Environment”. Which states that “Faculty will provide students with an opportunity in a timely fashion to review and discuss any graded examinations, papers, and other assignments, so that students may make informed decisions based on the feedback received.” In addition, “… provide timely and relevant feedback to the student on their performance…”.
We believe this absence of timely and relevant feedback by way of grading assignments in a reasonable amount of time has caused us the inability to make informed decisions on assignments and thus miss out on incorporating feedback into future assignments. And thus scoring lower than expected on assignments that we submitted over 2 months ago. We are aware that things come up and are empathetic to the fact that Dr. Brown has a myriad of professional responsibilities outside of our class. But we were given no communication throughout this semester regarding the state of our grades and ungraded assignments. And if we were to ask Dr. Brown we were told that “ our grades shouldn’t change how we study and knowing our grades should have no impact on us or our performance”.
We would like to propose and ask CSUS administration for the chance to either submit corrections for these assignments or for the grading policy for these assignments to be changed to credit/no credit based on whether or not the assignment was submitted on time and effort was demonstrated.
