Animal testing in America is expensive-most of it can be cut including alternative methods used, and the money better spent for the nation's elderly such as Medicare and for medicine rather than lining the pockets of wealthy researchers who are living off the pork of the land's waste of public funding.
USA spends $16 billion dollars annually for animal testing at tax payers' expense and is subject to massive waste and mismanagement of taxpayers' dollars.
Just a sample what goes on:
Much of this cruelty is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which allocates 40% of its annual research budget to animal experiments. Based on the NIH’s 2010 budget, this accounts for more than $16 billion:
Quoted in part:
Ohio State University: $1.9 million for cruel heart attack experiments on dogs (never mind the fact humans live sedentary lives and have a lifestyle of KFC and McDonalds grease).
University of Wisconsin-Madison: $3 million for cruel fighting experiments on mice (never mind humans have a much more complex social interaction including peer pressure not seen in mice.)
Oregon National Primate Research Cenetr: $5 million for cruel obesity experiments on monkeys (never mind humans have choices what they put in their mouths plus sedentary lives).
Harvard University: $16 million for cruel drug addiction experiments on monkeys (never mind the fact humans have a much more complex sociological interaction and much more advanced brain than monkeys).
Over a HALF MILLION dollars in STIMULUS money was spent on monkey business:
"A Fox 4 investigation has one lawmaker taking action after we discovered the government is using more than a half-million dollars in stimulus money - money meant for saving and creating jobs - to buy monkeys for flu vaccine experiments." NOT a single job was created.
To reduce government spending, animal testing should be done responsibly with our tax payers' expense in mind. Cuts on useless or impractical experiments, for example, concerning addiction, obesity, and drug abuse must cease. Human society is far more complex than any animal can produce including peer pressure, power of choice (to start and stop), that subhuman animals cannot attain.
Quote: "These included 1200 separate projects (at up to $495,600,000) examining drug addiction. 778 projects studying "neural information processing" in 11 species racked up approximately $321,314,000. No experiment, however ridiculous, useless or painful, is illegal. The majority of animals used in experimentation receive absolutely no protection under current laws. Hundreds of institutions and thousands of individuals profit off of vivisection. Government funded animal testing costs U.S. taxpayers OVER $16 billion annually."
"The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) animal testing programs subject animals to irradiation, burnings, bombings, wounds and decompression sickness. Every year, at least 320,000 primates, dogs, pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, cats, and other animals are hurt and killed by the DoD. Cost to tax payers: $100 million dollars annually."
--We already know irritation, burns, bombs etc hurts and causes injury and suffering.
--We know cigarette smoking is hazardous to health, causes cancer, and is addictive: So why are we repeating these experiments over and over again at our expense?
-Universities keep on surgically implanting electric probes in the brains of cats when it was repeatedly done millions of times before. At our expense.
--We all know overeating can make one obese.
REMEDY: Please implement guidelines to cut the pork and waste. Animal testing should only be done if ABSOLUTELY necessary.
