The Issue

We are calling for greater transparency, accountability, and ethical treatment of volunteers at Sadhana Forest in Auroville, India, and the other Sadhana Forest projects around the world.

Over time, numerous concerning reports have emerged from former volunteers regarding exploitative practices and coercive conditions within the community. These allegations deserve serious attention and independent review.

Key Concerns
1. Excessive and Misrepresented Work Hours
Volunteers report being told they would contribute approximately 35 hours per week, but later being pressured or required to work 70–80 hours per week. Clear agreements and informed consent are essential in any volunteer program.

2. Restrictions on Personal Freedom
There are reports of volunteers being discouraged or prevented from:

  • Leaving the premises freely
  • Taking time off or vacations
  • Maintaining personal relationships

Any community that restricts personal autonomy without transparency raises serious ethical concerns.

3. Suppression of Language and Expression
Some volunteers allege that certain languages are discouraged in common areas, while others are tolerated. Equal respect for linguistic and cultural diversity must be upheld in any international community.

4. Targeting Vulnerable Individuals
Particularly troubling are claims that individuals in emotionally, financially, or socially vulnerable situations are recruited and then subjected to controlling environments. Vulnerable people deserve protection and support — not manipulation.

What We Are Calling For
We urge:

  • An independent investigation into volunteer and past volunteer conditions
  • Transparent written agreements outlining actual expectations
  • Clear policies protecting volunteers’ freedom of movement and personal autonomy
  • Safe reporting channels for grievances
  • Oversight by relevant authorities in Auroville and Tamil Nadu

Communities built around sustainability and service must uphold the highest ethical standards. Volunteer-driven organizations depend on trust — and trust requires transparency.

We believe in ecological restoration and conscious community living. We also believe that no cause justifies exploitation, coercion, or suppression of individual rights.

If you are a former volunteer willing to share your experience, we encourage you to speak out safely.

Let us work toward accountability, fairness, and dignity for all.
