Petition for the Implementation of the MS2GS/Sacramento Street Improvement Project
Why this petition matters

(**Note**please sign our petition, but do NOT donate any money on this petition, thanks!)
Anyone can sign this petition in support of the Mean Streets to Green Streets (MS2GS) project, which is a grassroots-based attempt to restore the residential quality of the St. Vincent's Hill Historic District. We hope that this project will serve as a pilot program for other Vallejo neighborhoods to reduce traffic and plant street trees effectively and as inexpensively as possible.
Sacramento Street (located in the St. Vincent's Hill Historic District) was changed from a 2 lane residential street into a four lane speedway during Vallejo's period of Redevelopment in the 1960's - 1970's. This change to inner city speedways happened all around Vallejo. Residential streets were widened in many neighborhoods, to the detriment of the city.
Front yards, pedestrian safety, quality of life, aesthetic value, and property values were lost.
- Asphalt lasts longer if it is shaded!
- Shaded streets do not hold or collect heat thus they cool down the city!
- Neighborhoods with street trees have less crime and higher property values!
- Street trees provide a shady place to park your car on a hot day!
- Trees mitigate wind, pollution, and rainfall!
- Street trees create a pleasant environment for pedestrians!
- Street Trees make the community beautiful!
We, the undersigned, request the Vallejo Public Works Department to:
- Reinstate the 2017 Vallejo City Council's unanimous decision for the Mean Streets to Green Streets Project to be researched for grants.
- Create the necessary plans for a Road Diet for Sacramento Street in the Historic District, which would reduce the number of lanes from four lanes to two lanes and keep the parking lanes the way they are. The remaining two lanes we request become planting strips for street trees to be installed on both sides of Sacramento Street.
- Collaborate with Vallejo citizens to write grants to pay for this project.
- We suggest not to repave the St. Vincent's Hill Historic District's section of Sacramento Street until a Road Diet and Street Tree Implementation Plan is developed.
