Petition for the demand of accessible e-book publication act in India
Petition for the demand of accessible e-book publication act in India
Why this petition matters
We the Print-Disabled people usually read through audio books. It is known to all of us that there are many limitations in case of audio book but still we compel to use those books as there is no better option for us. It is right that we are acquainted with the content of a book by listening the recording, but most of the time we cannot become aware of the spelling and hence most of us suffer from spelling weakness. Even we cannot understand the line-division in case of Verse. Moreover, we have to depend on the quality of the recordist to get a good audio book. Above all, as we cannot understand the punctuation of the contents, we cannot make citation from those books and so audio books become totally worthless in case of any kind of research work.
All the previously mentioned problems can be solved easily through accessible E-books. However, some NGO and Educational institutions make accessible E-books of their own, but those are too meagre to the requirement. Here comes the necessity of enacting a strong act, which will make all the publishers compel to bring out an accessible soft copy in ‘Epub 3’ format maintaining the international accessibility standard along with each hard copy being published in the market. Here accessible soft copy or accessible E-book means the book which can be read by the print-disabled people by the screen-reading software as comfortably as a sighted person read E-book in smart phone or in laptop.
In fact, E-book is the inevitable future for the coming days and this the high time to speak of accessible E-book otherwise those books may not be inclusive in nature. Already such act has been passed in European Union to meet this crisis. This type of law should be enacted in our country too.
We on behalf of Forum for Students with disabilities Jadavpur University (FSDJU) request you all to sign this petition so that we can provide an accumulative data of the targeted beneficiaries to the parliament, which is an initial process for enacting a new act.
