petition for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to activate the Traffic Lights at State Highway 1 (west Street & East Street)  

Stated on the Waka Kotahi website that completion will not be for another 8.5 months approx. 

there has already been numerous Close calls to traffic collisions and incidents over the past few weeks, and with the ongoing moving of the cones and blocking some of the streets this has been confusing for some drivers,

Project completion
We expect the work at the rail level crossing to be finished and both the new traffic lights and rail warning lights to be working by the end of the year.

Following the switching on of the traffic lights and rail warning lights, there will be some final finishing work needed and we expect the whole project to be completed in early 2023.

This project is part of the New Zealand Upgrade Programme, which is providing growing communities with better travel choices that help people get where they're going safely.

this would take quite some time and we dont know how long before an accident occurs
