I’m only 18 years old and after yesterday’s night political debate , I told my father that the Opposition Parties in Singapore should come together . When I first told my father this , he thought I meant that the Opposition Parties should come together and make a party . But no , I meant that they should all come together , for the greater good . For us Singaporeans , the people . As what Dr Jamus Lim has said last night , that we’re trying to deny PAP a blank cheque .

 

Last night I saw Dr Vivian Balakrishnan calling out Dr Chee Soon Juan for a “falsehood” , “cheap shot” and “false statement” … and saying “Let me state for the record , we will never have 10 million . We won’t even have 6.9 million” . I realised that Dr CSJ was never given a chance to finish what he was conveying and never given a chance to cite what Mr Heng Swee Keat said .

 

On 29 March 2019 reported by Straits Times https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/sporeans-must-remain-open-to-foreigners-says-heng,

“On the projected population of 6.9 million by 2030 , set out in the Government’s 2013 Population White Paper , Mr Heng said the number goes beyond how densely populated Singapore would be . The social space is as important .  

 

Singapore's population density is not excessive , he said , noting that other cities are a lot more crowded in terms of liveable space .

 

He cited former chief planner Liu Thai Ker , who said in 2014 that Singapore should plan for 10 million people for it to remain sustainable in the long term .”

“According to Liu Thai Ker , Singapore should not stop its population growth project at the figure of 6.9 million listed in the 2013 White Paper on Population .

 

‘That is an interim figure and project and obviously Singapore is going to grow beyond that ,’ he said yesterday at a seminar , “Building a Nation: Tomorrow, Challenges and Possibilities for a Liveable Singapore” .

 

In the debate , Dr VB also told Dr Jamus Lim “You know Dr Lim , I read your manifesto and actually to be honest with you , we could have written the same manifesto” . Maybe that’s what PAP should be doing , coming up with what they think is a position just half a step to the left , something that they think the Opposition will use to try to appeal to Singapore citizens . But in all fairness , what the PAP feels to be half a step or actually no position at all could really be a huge leap forward for us Singaporeans , especially the ones who are suffering . What they think would appeal to Singaporeans might actually be part of the solution we really need . But because it sounds so simple … the PAP didn’t put it in place .

 

Even though Dr CSJ has very responsibly posted and cited the Straits Times report in his Facebook https://www.facebook.com/cheesoonjuan/posts/10160581202958849 where Mr HSK agreed and cited the idea of a 10m population … or am I mistaken here ? I thought you would only cite a paper , research or study when you want to reinforce your points , if only Dr Jamus Lim did the unthinkable . By ceding CSJ his ultra-precious time of 1minute 30seconds in closing to cite the reports and clear his name since Dr VB was visibly angry at CSJ after he spoke about this .
