We, the residents and fellows of HCA Healthcare Aventura Hospital, are petitioning for an immediate housing stipend of $1,200 monthly based on the current economic impacts affecting us at this time. We propose this housing stipend based on the U.S. News [1] report ranking Miami, FL #2 in the nation as the most expensive place to live. Additionally, we have experienced an 8.5% annual inflation rate as of March 2022 [2] coupled with a surge in energy, fuel, and food costs, which have substantially impacted our livability within a reasonable distance of the hospital. Moreover, compared to other HCA hospitals offering residency programs, our income-to-expense ratio is significantly lower owing to the cost of living in this area. This affects not only our current well-being but will have far-lasting implications for future applicants. Furthermore, the stated vision of HCA is “Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.” If this truly is the vision of HCA, it should apply to those of us who commit our time, effort, and excellence to the development and integrity of this corporation.
