This is a petition to show the support in the Brighton/Allston area for the dedication of Shim Gum Do Founding Master Great Zen Master Chang Sik Kim Square on the corner of Chestnut Hill Ave and Chiswick St. Sa Bu Nim, as he was known to his students, was an enlightened Zen Master and the Founding Master of the Zen practice Shim Gum Do. He came to America with only $20 in the 1970s and just a few short years later, in 1978, established the American Buddhist Shim Gum Do Association (ABSGDA). In 1981 he established the Shim Gwang Sa (Mind Light Temple) at 203 Chestnut Hill Ave in Brighton MA. Shim Gwang Sa is the main Shim Gum Do temple, home of ABSGDA and is the headquarters of the World Shim Gum Do Association. In 1985, Sa Bu Nim proudly became a United States Citizen. Over the years, Sa Bu Nim has taught countless students Shim Gum Do from this location, spreading the art across the globe with schools established in Korea, Italy, and around the USA. He was a pillar of the community, constantly looking for ways to improve and beautify the Brighton neighborhood he lived in, watching it almost completely transform as his temple continued to grow and thrive. Sa Bu Nim passed away on March 12th of 2021, leaving behind a lasting legacy that will continue to play out in the city of Boston for many years to come. Please sign this petition to show your support of commemorating his life and gifts to Brighton by dedication of a corner to him across the street from the landmark that he created with his hands and the power of his enlightened mind.
