My son Elias was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome . January 24th he went back for an open heart surgery and tested positive for Covid pneumonia a few days after open heart surgery . Although he did not show symptoms until several days later I still feel like it’s important people who are inpatient should be tested for Covid AND other viruses before having surgery especially major surgeries requiring a lung /heart bypass machine. I have other reasons to believe he could’ve had Covid before heart surgery such as I myself got my first Covid symptom the same night he came back from the OR and the next day I tested positive and stayed home for 8 days to try to protect him . After nearly 8 weeks of intubation my son Elias was extubated and died 2 days later. People can spend weeks -months in patient before having surgery so a test upon admission test would not be accurate in these scenarios. Ultimately I hope this petition is able to help others out who are inpatient that will go through surgery .
