PETITION BY CITIZENS OF LAURINBURG FOR WATER/SEWER RATE REDUCTION

WHEREAS, on June 8, 2015 the Manager of the City of Laurinburg presented to the City Council a proposal to raise Water/Sewer rates 35% across the board; (See Min. Bk. 18, at Page 54); and,
WHEREAS, on June 9, 2015, the City Manager explained to the City Council that “the water and sewer fee increases will generate approximately $1.5 million additional revenue in the Water/Sewer Fund…and that a rate structure study will be conducted in the next fiscal year that will encourage users to conserve”. (Min. Bk. 18, at Page 57); and,
WHEREAS, on June 16, 2015, the increase in rates for the Water/Sewer Fund was presented to the City Council, and Council member Hammond made a motion to accept the proposed rate increases in the Water/Sewer Fund, which motion was seconded by Council member Williamson; and,
WHEREAS, on June 16, 2015, the five (5) members of the City Council, Williamson, Willis, Adams, Leak, and Hammond, voted to increase the Water/Sewer Fund rates (Min. Bk. 18, at Page 67); and,
WHEREAS no Public Input Session was recommended or sought by the members of the City Council prior to voting to increase the Water/Sewer rates by 35%; and,
WHEREAS, now approximately $3 million ($3,000,000.00) dollars has been added to the Water/Sewer Fund of the City of Laurinburg,
NOW THEN, WE, THE CITIZENS OF LAURINBURG PETITION THAT THE DRACONIAN 35% INCREASE IN WATER/SEWER RATES BE STOPPED AND A 30% REDUCTION IN RATES BE GIVEN IMMEDIATELY TO THE CITIZENS OF
