On March 3rd, Professor of health systems at DCU Dr. Anthony Staines appeared on the radio station Newstalk. Dr. Staines, a distinguished academic, paediatrician and epidemiologist told Newstalk that suggestions that students who were involved in the events of March 2nd could be expelled are “absurd'” and that "If everyone who did something stupid at college was thrown out, there'd be about five graduates in the country!”.

Dr. Staines went on to say that, "Young people are easy to get at because they're very visible: they're out on the street, they're on social media, they put themselves on social media. /It is very difficult on students, they're at a transitional stage in their lives - they're moving away from home, setting up their own identities; maybe separate from their families.”

We believe it is essential that the recent immature behaviour of a minority of the student body be contextualised, the mental health of many students has deteriorated over the past few months due to government lockdowns and this has resulted in considerable suffering.

We also believe that while the behaviour witnessed by residents at College Court on March 2nd is indeed inexcusable; Covid-19 has placed a considerable burden on the entirety of Irish society and it is grossly unfair of the media to single out and demonize students exclusively above other demographics.

Many students and members of the wider public agree with Dr. Staines’ recent statements and believe that suspensions and possible expulsions are draconian punishments for those who were present. Similar events took place at NUIG last September, students who breached public health guidelines were asked to write a 2,000-word reflective essay as opposed to being suspended or expelled. We are asking that similar moderation, understating, and empathy be exercised by the university board and President Kerstin Mey when deliberating on the fate of those who were present at College Court on March 2nd.
