Currently Downtown Homewood has 13 categories of commercial zoning.  The City Council is proposing to simplify the code to three zoning categories which allow a change of "use" to residential.  While we have nothing against mixed-use development, we know:

Your favorite shops and restaurants will go away!  This rezoning of Downtown Homewood area will irreparably damage the small business oriented old town charm of Homewood. We will NOT retain what we have.  18th street is at risk of being modernized with a build out of height and use.

Large investors are seeking and are buying property along the 18th street corridor and toward HWY 31.  Developers intend to tear down buildings to build out the increased height and space that mixed-use allows.  Buildings with heights that look like three, four, five, six, seven stories will dominate the Downtown landscape over time.

The consequence of build out are massive parking issues. New developments would only require one parking spot per residential unit and two parking spaces per 3000 sq. feet of retail space. This is woefully inadequate. There is no plan for parking or traffic.

Our small businesses and our community cannot and will not survive these changes. Stop our city council and mayor from approving this disaster. Please add your name!
