Access to the internet is as important as access to infrastructure like electricity and water in 2013. The download speed in this community varies significantly at different times of the day (between 0.32 mbps and 2.0 mbps) which is not appropriate for business or personal use (not in 2013) and not when there is an unclear relationship between internet service providers, and those responsible for the installation of infrastructure such as Chorus, Transfield Services, and Internet Service Providers. This petition is to increase the speed in the community of Tirohanga, Opotiki so that access to the internet is at least comparable to other parts of New Zealand. This is a rural area with a high Maori population. This sort of speed does not help to bridge the digital divide for Maori either.
