A place like none other, Waterton Springs Campground shares a border with Waterton Lakes National Park. It is the perfect place to view spectacular scenery, wildlife and enjoy recreational activities.
The property was purchased by the Nature Conservancy of Canada in 2007 with the objective to protect the land from proposed developments. The NCC kept the lease for 10 years, but now they are preparing to decommission the campground. They have extended their closure date to include one more season to accomodate Canada’s 150th celebration. However, the NCC does not actually want to see the campsite close. They have approached the province of Alberta, Alberta Parks and Recreation, and Parks Canada with options that one of them might take it over, but it seems that none have expressed any immediate interest. So, as of now, this will be the last season for Waterton springs Campground.
I am not willing to just sit around and wait for this to happen! We need to save Waterton Springs Campground! Please help petition the Province of Alberta to step in and mandate for Waterton Springs. Having grown up in Southern Alberta, I cannot count how many times I have been to Waterton. As a child and then as a teenager, I visited Waterton as often as a could get my parents to take me there each summer. As a young adult, I went even more in every season to hike, camp, backpack, or cross country ski. Now, although I live a bit farther from Waterton, I am intentional in including Waterton in our summer plans each year. My family and I have camped at Waterton Springs Campground at least once a year, every year, for over a decade.
Camping within the National Park is wonderful, but very limited. The Waterton area sees more than 400,000 people per year. Waterton Springs Campground served nearly 10,000 campers over a six-month period in the past year. Anyone who camps in Southern Alberta (likely anywhere in Canada), knows how difficult it is getting to find a place to camp. This even goes for the die hards, who plan their summer while the snow is still falling. We need more places to camp, not less. We need to enable more people, and more families, to get out and enjoy this amazing country. Campgrounds like Waterton Springs ensure that nature is preserved, while allowing people places to experience it. This is an established campground, it doesn't make sense NOT to keep it. Please pass this petition on to everyone you can think of.... let's save Waterton Springs Campground so generations to come will have the opportunity to experience this amazing place.
