In 2016, the Fossil Free UTAS group were assured of the university's commitment to becoming carbon neutral. Auditing was done, and it was found that $175,000 annually would need to be committed to the scheme - a small piece of UTAS' large budget. Peter Rathjen has voiced his support of UTAS going carbon neutral publicly. Yet, no action has been taken. The move has been shelved and the money devoted to UTAS' infrastructure expansion. It is likely to continue to be shelved unless we, the students, speak up. Tell UTAS that if our infrastructure is to grow, and we are to become an internationally renowned, urban university, then our sustainability policy must also grow. We must follow leaders like Charles Sturt University, in NSW, and go carbon neutral if we are to be the progressive institution that UTAS management seeks to purport. If we do not go carbon neutral we discredit the innovative work of UTAS' staff and students, who aim to understand climate change and how we can mitigate its effects. Most importantly, by not making a commitment as an institution to stopping climate change, we risk to the future of UTAS' island home and the livelihoods of UTAS' staff and students - all that we seek to achieve through our education.
83% of students said that UTAS needed to go carbon neutral in the 2016 Sustainability Survey. Sign this petition to tell the UTAS management that this is not just a number - it is the voice of the students, and it needs to be heard and acted upon.
