A resolution to the new pension arrangement for Edinburgh University staff

A lecturer's impact is often unrecognised and vastly under-appreciated. As university students, to be taught by staff whose knowledge of a subject is so large, and whose dedication to their craft is noticeable in all they do is an absolute privilege. Without them, our learning would be limited. Lecturers are educators. They are friends, family, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers. But above all, lecturers are humans. They must live and thrive like everyone else, and deserve to be treated with utmost respect. We must not allow them to live in fear and uncertainty for their futures ahead; therefore, a plan of action must be adopted to ensure security in monetary stability through a cohesive and fixed pension agreement.

I'm sure those of you at Edinburgh University are aware of the days of striking proposed in response to a nation-wide decision to change university staff pension arrangements to one which will negatively effect them - figures suggest a loss of around 40% of expected pension for lecturers. In response, the University and Colleges Union has come out in support of a 14 day long strike, and therefore members of this union will commence striking Monday the 26th of February.

This, of course, appears problematic to the average student - the concern of missed work and thus a discrepancy in the extortionate amount of money in fees we pay is unfair. However, the strike is vastly important, and considering many of us one day might choose to work similar jobs in similar sectors, we must consider how cuts like these will one day affect us.

Therefore, I think as students we should wholeheartedly support this strike, and more importantly press the highest authority here at Edinburgh University for a fee refund for the days of university missed due to striking staff (lectures, tutorials, seminars, labs, etc.), and that resolution in the best interest of lecturers be made as soon as possible.
