Peter King, Once Was Too Much: Not Another Muslim Hearing!
Earlier this year, Representative Peter King (R-NY) held Congressional hearings on the purported “Radicalization” of the American Muslim community. Now he wants to do it again this week. Singling out a religious community is wrong and misguided. Doing it twice under the same false pretenses is intolerable.
Join us in signing the “Once Was Too Much” petition. Protecting our country and its national security interests is essential. But singling out a religious community undermines the values we most seek to protect. Once was too much. Undermining religious freedom -- again -- cannot be tolerated.
- U.S. House of Representatives
As an American, I find it highly disturbing that you have chosen to hold hearings on "the radicalization of Muslim Americans." While terrorism and violence in all forms are threats to American national security, singling out any one community for inquiry is not only a failed approach to policy, but undermines our most important value as Americans. As someone who cares about interfaith issues, I find these hearings to be troubling for the implications they have on religious freedom in America. As a member of Religious Freedom USA, I ask that you cancel plans for these hearings.
Rather than holding hearings on Muslim Americans as a communal threat, I encourage you to hear Muslim-Americans share their patriotism for this country, including the 3,500 Muslim Americans in the armed forces, the many congregations across the nation, as well as elected officials whose patriotism does not conflict with their faith. Please do the right thing and cancel these hearings.
