The Prospective Marriage Visa (subclass 300), other wise known as the PMV 300, is for people who want to come to Australia to marry a loved one who is an Australian citizen.

Australia has some of the toughest rules on immigration and the bar is set even higher for the PMV 300. This visa is only valid for 9 months, costs 7.7k AUD and comes with an average processing time of 18 months. This generally means that the sponsor and applicant are living separately in other countries during this application processing time, a testament to the strength of their relationship.

Anyone who is granted a PMV 300 has already done the hard yards, respected the rules and have been rewarded for their effort & patience. However, for those applicants who have been granted the PMV 300 recently, the wait to see their loved ones continues. Those with this visa cannot travel to Australia at the moment due to the borders closing in response to the pandemic.

We honour and respect the fact that the border closures where necessary to protect the Australian people. We would not have it any other way. And while we find it disappointing, we also respect the fact that the majority of travel exemptions to allow travel for PMV 300 visa holders is generally rejected as holders of these visa's do not meet the requirements of immediate family nor does an expiring visa or mental harm from being separated from a loved one meet the qualifications for an exemption on compelling or compassionate grounds. Anecdotal evidence suggests that those who have been successfully granted an exemption is due largely to the empathy of who processed the application as opposed to meeting the parameters outlined in policy (which is not published).

As per feedback from the Department of Human Affairs, these visa's will not be extended. So from the same department who have rolled out a policy that systemically blocks any travel exemption being granted for this visa, they are also stating that the visa will not be extended. And instead we are being told to pay the exorbitant processing fee, to wait the extended processing time (which is YEARS in some cases) and to be "patient". Its at this point they are being unreasonable and I feel are violating the democratic ideals of respect & fairness.

Yet again while we honour and respect the need of the Australian Border Force to protect the Australian people, those with the PMV 300 should be given a Fair Go and have their Visa's extended post border closure. It is unreasonable and simply not fair to subject those couples who have already met ALL that has been asked of them to go through the process again, especially as an extension of the visa costs the government nothing, there is no risk, no cost, nothing, while on the flip side it's causing immeasurable harm to those affected by these policies. All we want is to be together.

For all of you who have read this far, Thankyou. It means the world to us.

Thanks

Jay & Frey
