Border Force tore this family apart...are Priya and Nades next?

Angela Fredericks
BILOELA, Australia

Jul 26, 2018 — Last week, something terrible happened.

Border Force defied the UN by forcing a 30-year-old Sydney dad, Thileepan, from Australia to danger, permanently separating him from his wife Karthika and their 11-month-old baby Najomi.

This happened just a few days after Karthika, a recognised refugee, was granted safe haven in Australia. Karthika begged Border Force not to tear her family apart. But not even the UN could stop this cruelty.

For five months, my friends Priya, Nades and their Australian-born daughters, Kopika and Tharunicaa have been trapped in a Melbourne detention centre. And Border Force are still trying to send them from Australia to danger.

Yesterday, I found out that Priya’s appeal to the Federal Court will be heard on 27 August. If the appeal is successful, Priya will gain the right to have her plea for protection reconsidered. A decision in Priya’s case would also include her daughter Kopika, that cheeky three-year-old Bilo girl we all miss so terribly.

But Australia’s complicated, ever-changing immigration laws mean that whatever the outcome of Priya’s appeal, husband Nades and baby Tharunicaa will have no legal protection against being forced back to danger.

In June, government lawyers told the court that they don’t “usually” separate families. But after seeing what happened to another Tamil family last week, we can’t afford to take any risks.

Mr Dutton has the power to step in to keep Priya, Nades and the girls safely together in Australia. He can choose to bring them home to Biloela, where they are loved and wanted.

We need to send a powerful message to Mr Dutton. We have a plan, but we’re going to need everyone to pitch in – so please stay tuned.

For now, if you’re in Biloela or Melbourne, please join us next Wednesday 1 August for a night of togetherness over a traditional, Tamil feast. For one night, let’s remind ourselves what it means to be part of a caring, welcoming community.
