Eradicate Plastic Straws From HCDSB Schools In Oakville

There are many posts circulating the internet regarding the current environmental crisis. It is time we as HCDSB students practice what we preach and make a change for the better in our school system. We all know the detrimental effects plastic has on the environment, and that it has killed millions of marine animals and seabirds. Did you also know that plastic has negative effects on our health as well though? Plastic that is littered leaches harmful chemicals into our soil and waterways, which ends up in our food supply. Consuming these chemicals puts us at a greater risk of developing issues in our endocrine system, which can lead to diseases such as cancer. It is time we use our voices to stop being part of the problem, and start being part of the solution. Join me in urging the HCDSB trustees of Oakville to eliminate the use of plastic straws in our cafeterias, and replace them with paper straws instead. It is a small change, but it will make a big difference.
