Stop Petco from Inhumanely Trapping Fish
Many Pet stores abuse animals, in this petition I am focusing on the inhumane sizes of homes pet betta fish are being kept in. They are being kept in bags, and small containers: the size of a tiny bowl. They aren’t even stores in even the size of a takeout rice bowl. Koi fishes need 50 gallons of water, while as a baby they don’t need that much they still need plenty of room to swim. Some pet fish will not be adopted and forced to live their entire lives in these “containers”, if you can call it that.
Most betta fish sold by Petco and other pet store chains are from breeding farms, the same as a puppy mill for fish. They are packed in bags with chemicals, many starve, and stored away to the store. They can die from the small packaging trying to get out. They are tropical fish that need the right temperatures to survive and they’re not getting that! They aren’t getting enough room!
At the stores, they are neglected and abused until they die. Millions of betta fish die every year from this treatment. It’s sick and it’s wrong. They are getting illnesses, in the fins, bladder etc. due to this. Fish deserve the same treatment as you’d give a pet dog or cat or horse. Science has proven pet fish feel pain, fear, sadness etc. so putting them through this is quite literally torture. After you sign and share this, please also check out these resources on the matter.

There are also hundreds of YouTube videos that show the sizes and situations these fish are living. Also, please seek out other petitions advocating for change. Petco, you are the lead company that does this. This is disgusting, filthy and you need to do better. These “pet” fish do not deserve to be murdered. Please change your policies and listen to the voices advocating for change. Remember, to shop locally for dog food, pet care etc. and support businesses that are animal cruelty free.
