Many rescues are ran by people wanting to see animals adopted to loving homes and not killed due to lack of space in kill shelters. Many of these rescues are ran by common people and are funded by donations and/or the rescue owners footing the bills to care for the animals that are taken in. Non governmental rescues do not receive funding from the counties in which they reside unlike their local animal shelters, most of which, are kill shelters. Some of these shelters could provide for more animals if there were more ways to buy items needed to provide proper care of such animals. By having a program for rescues such as Box Tops for Education, rescues can better their facilities and better their effort to help animals.
Cages are one of the biggest concerns. Decent cages for cats and dogs are expensive, some of the smaller scale rescues use wire crates and those are hard to keep clean. In addition to cages, we'd need the ability to purchase items we need to run effiecently such as bath tubs, grooming supplies, vaccines, medical supplies, food, litter, blankets, toys, etc. The list to properly run a rescue is non ending and then we have the biggest expense and that is veterinary care.
Having a Box Top for Rescue program will help save many animals lives, will help rescues pull more animals from death row in kill shelters and will help get the community further involved in animal care, compassion and education.
Please consider implementing such a program geared to helping rescues to improve the quality of care by offering a plan for rescues to be able to purchase much needed items for our rescues so we do not have to take any money away from the pets we care for.
