Year 12 students should be able to bring a date of their choosing to their formal

As a year 12 student it should be our right to bring a date of our choosing to the formal. Whether they are in the year above or below us, from a different school or have even left school it should be our choice as to who we bring.
Majority of year 12 students have long term girlfriends/boyfriends that aren't in our year that they wish they could take but can't because of the new rules. This is unfair because in previous years, year 12's were allowed to bring whoever they wanted. Why should we miss out on this when no one else has?
Last year only year 12 and 13 students could attend the formal which was also incredibly unfair because the year 13 students have their own ball earlier in the year, why do they get to attend both? How is bringing a date from out of RHS or a different year group any different than bringing a year 13?
Seeing as it is OUR formal I believe we should be able to attend with someone of our choosing.
