Brooke Schorie started this petition to Perry High School Class of 2021

HI!! I’m a fellow graduating senior of Perry High, and I have a major problem. Throughout this unprecedented school year, Perry admin has made several questionable decisions on several fronts, and the decision I bring forth today is that of our “student selected” graduation speaker. As a farewell to make my mark on this campus, I am wanting to denormalize ignorance and supremacy to bring forth an era where students have a voice and can make the changes we see fit. We are the heart and soul of this campus and deserve to be treated with respect. I encourage graduating seniors to sign this to support our effort. The following is an excerpt of an email I sent to Mr. Serrano about the topic, and I’m including this to give the necessary context:

IMPORTANT NOTE: this is for Perry seniors and their parents as well

Since learning who was selected as the graduation speaker for this commencement, we have all processed this decision and have been appalled and shocked by it. It is deeply upsetting to me and shows worse issues occurring within our school. This person does not represent what we stand for as a class; he bullies those he views as inferior to himself, turns a blind eye to the gross actions of his friends, helps that small group he thinks acceptable cheat, and has done many other despicable things I will not share for the sake of confidentiality. I have known him most of my life and have seen all of this with my own eyes; I will not stand by while the school indirectly condones this behavior by platforming him at my graduation. Our school has an incredible student body that is full of color and life with each student’s unique and difficult life experiences. Our speaker does not encapsulate the importance and validity of these experiences, and, by speaking, it shows we believe his experience of privilege is superior. He is not entitled to speaking and does not deserve our attention.

However, despite all of his traits that I have described, I do not believe that taking the speech away from him at the last minute will be beneficial; I have little desire to hear him complain, make a mess out of this, and, in consequence, receive even more attention he should not have in the first place. I instead propose to have another admirable member of the student body added to the graduation line-up. Our ceremony is long, and I am sure there is something that could give to allow a deserving student to say their piece.
