PETITION TO THE CITY OF SANTA ANA - DEPARTMENT OF PARKS, RECREATION, AND COMMUNITY❗

Sports always have a way of bringing the community together.  While traditional sports like tennis and basketball are well catered to, with plenty of places to play the game, pickleball doesn't have the same luck!  PICKLEBALL IS THE FASTEST GROWING SPORT IN THE WORLD!  It’s time for our City of Santa Ana to embrace the sport of pickleball and provide proper courts with lights for our residents to enjoy the game, there will be many benefits for the community!

We have observed empty tennis courts both day and night at the below mentioned facilities where they could have been filled up with pickleball players and the impact it can have for the growth of Santa Ana, as well as Orange County, California!

We, the undersigned, call upon the Mayor of Santa Ana VICENTE SARMIENTO and Parks and Recreation Director LISA RUDLOFF in the order of preference, so that pickleball courts could be accessible both days and evenings by the Summer of 2022:

1) CABRILLO TENNIS CENTER:  a) Convert 1 of the 9 tennis courts into 4 dedicated pickleball courts, or make it a hybrid tennis/pickleball court with permanent lines, AND b) Convert the stand-alone unused tennis court into 4 dedicated pickleball courts with lights.

2) WINDSOR PARK:  Convert 2 tennis courts into 8 dedicated pickleball courts.

3) PORTOLA PARK:  Convert the stand-alone tennis court into 4 dedicated pickleball courts, or make it a hybrid tennis/pickleball court with permanent lines.

Then, we will get to introduce local kids and their families as well as the underprivileged people to a new sport, provide a healthy, active outlet and hobby for citizens of all ages, and will get more people moving and enjoying the outdoors more often!  We the pickleball community wouldn't mind doing fundraisers to assist the City build a stronger Santa Ana through the pickleball programs!

Dedicated pickleball courts will significantly increase the public’s awareness of and access to this dynamic sport.  Currently, the entire city of Santa Ana has only ONE dedicated pickleball court at Santa Ana High School Tennis Center.  The temporary nets are set up by team First Serve Santa Ana mainly in the morning during weekends from 9 AM to 12 PM.  Outside of those hours, the nets are locked away.

Due to the soaring popularity of this decades-old game, many parks and recreation departments are now adding pickleball to their sports programming.  Pickleball is the fastest growing sport-2 years in a row!  39.3% GROWTH IN 2 YEARS!  4.8 M PLAYERS IN THE U.S.! *Source: SFIA 2022 Sports, Fitness, & Leisure Activities Topline Participation Report.

Thank you for considering our requests, which represents a great opportunity for the City of Santa Ana and Orange County.  Dedicated pickleball courts are not only a highly desirable amenity for Santa Ana residents, but also sought after by visitors to Orange County.
