I lost my sweet dog Pepper at the age of 4 to a blood autoimmune disease he acquired a short time after receiving his 2nd Rabies vaccine. He was diagnosed with IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia) which is is a disease in which the body's immune system, attacks and kills the body's own red blood cells. The attack begins when antibodies, which are molecules made by the immune system to target germs, instead attach to and target the animal's own red blood cells for destruction. He also suffered from ITP (Immune thrombocytopenia) which is a condition where the immune system destroys platelets and causes internal hemorrhaging. He only weighed 10 pounds and once he became ill, it was determined that the initial Rabies vaccine he received as a puppy was enough to last him a lifetime and he did not require further vaccination. After doing a lot of research I found that the disease he had is directly linked to the Rabies vaccination. Now I have lost the love of my heart and I don't want anyone else to have to suffer the way we have.
Countless others have shared similar stories of tragedy, heartache and loss at the hands of repeated, unnecessary vaccines. Many studies have shown that once the pet receives their initial booster shots, they have enough immunity to last for 7 years to a lifetime, especially for smaller animals. Research confirms that the immune system has a "memory." Once those memory cells have been shown what to do against a particular disease (by one successful vaccination), those memory cells will produce antibodies against that disease whenever they encounter it in real life – for years and years, probably for life. Yet we are required to give the annual Rabies vaccine or the 3 year Rabies vaccine by law. We are also led to believe that these combo vaccinations (Bordetella, Parvo, Distemper etc) are necessary on a yearly basis and our pets lives are in danger if we don't give them these annual shots.
The American Veterinary Medical Association needs to change the standard veterinary practice and require vets to give a titer test before administering any mandated/required vaccinations-particularly Rabies. This test will determine if the dog or cat already has enough of the antibody in his system before overloading his body with so much that it turns on itself and causes irreversible harm. If it is found that the pet has enough of the antibody in his system, then he should not be required to have the vaccine at that time.
This is extremely important because so many dogs and cats are over-vaccinated and it is causing illness and premature death. This needs to be regulated and changed immediately to eliminate the suffering of pets and pet owners.
