PROPOSAL FOR FIRST FRIDAY GALLERY WALK IN OLD CITY

We are aiming to revitalize First Friday in Old City.

“Started in 1991 by a group of galleries as a collaborative open house evening, First Fridays grew quickly into one of Philly’s most vital, signature cultural events. Old City’s historic commercial buildings have fostered a SoHo-like cultural ambiance with the densest network of galleries in the city.” (NB From visitphilly.com:)

At a time when the city really needed a focus on art, galleries and businesses organized First Friday in Old City Philadelphia, which created a legendary energizing core for the area.

Recently, many new businesses and galleries have opened in Old City, because they were counting on this iconic business trend, foot traffic and the vibrant collective effort that is the concept of First Friday. Their expectation is that First Friday will help to generate business by encouraging visitors from various parts of the city and its surroundings, which has been the case for years.

Observers can’t deny that First Fridays are a vital movement that helps to keep the arts integrated into the development of the city, not only by promoting well-established art businesses, but also emerging artists who can display their work in Old City once a month. It’s an opportunity to make art accessible for everyone, for the local community and to generate new traffic due to emerging artists inviting their peers to support them.

We wish to see some type of management from Old City District to service and regulate the sidewalk artists. Otherwise, we suggest organizing a volunteer “Old City Patrol “ with other businesses and galleries that would offer helpful advice, answer questions and guide emerging artists who wish to display their work.  An online guide could be provided to ease navigation.

Sidewalk exhibitions would be open from 5:30pm till 9pm on the First Friday of each month.

Our goal is to encourage a first trial of this experiment for the First Friday of September 2017 ( Sept 1st).
