We, as Filipino Youths, are deeply concerned that a study conducted by Jambeck et. al (2015) reported that the Philippines has become the world’s third biggest source of plastic trash in the ocean,

We are alarmed by a study reported by Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2016) which have estimated that plastic will outnumber fish in the ocean by 2050, and we realize its ill effect on one of the main livelihoods of our fellows,

Single-use plastics that never biodegrade and take hundreds of years to break down, are the most common, cheapest, and most accessible used plastics circulating in our communities,

One of the biggest recycling companies in the country confirmed that plastic straws are not accepted for reprocessing and recycling, thus remain as a landfill and/or a marine debris for over 200 years.

Emphasizing that the City Government of Iloilo and the Provincial and Municial Governments in Iloilo are institutions that have a mandate to lead, advocate, and become stewards of preserving and protecting the environment from degradation,

We are alarmed that news reports show that massive trash being accumulated during festivities in the Philippines like Christmas in Luneta Park, Masskara Festival at Bacolod City Hall Grounds, and the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo are becoming a norm.

Thus, it is high time now to take actions for it not to happen in Iloilo, and in any other places in the world. It is time now to cut our relationship with single use plastics. Let us start the change with the easiest plastic item we can avoid-Plastic straws.

We the people of Iloilo  do hereby urge our Local Government Units to pass policies prohibiting single use plastic straws and regulating the use of other single use plastics.
