This petition is to gather signatures to show Gordon County Government Commissioners along with the Planning and Zoning Commission, the people of Gordon County, Georgia are against Application Z21-03 that is ‘requesting to build 24 chicken houses now then as many as will comply in the future’.  Supporters of the petition are wanting our county leaders to make changes and have stricter regulations so other applicants of largescale industrial agriculture facilities (aka CAFOs-Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) will not be permitted in Gordon County.

Why do we care?

To protect the water we drink: Due to the high density of animals and the way waste is discharged into the water supply. Animal waste contains a variety of potential contaminants such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and pathogens like E. coli, growth hormones, antibiotics, chemicals used to clean equipment and animal blood. It is estimated that livestock animals in the U.S. produce annually somewhere between 3 and 20 times more manure than people in the U.S produce. This particular application will potentially compromise the Coosawattee River which is a water source of drinking water for the county.

To protect the air we breathe: Chicken mega houses produce several types of air emissions in large quantities.  Most common pollutants found in air around CAFOs are ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and methane to name a few. High rates of asthma are consistently found in people that live near CAFOs. Children take in 20-50% more air than adults which makes them more susceptible to lung diseases, being sick, and missing school.
