Freedom of expression is established as a constitutional right in the Philippines. No law abridging freedom of expression or the press must be passed, according to Article 3 of the 1987 Constitution. This guarantees our freedom to express ourselves in public through rallies and demonstrations, as well as in written articles, on television or radio, in works of art, and even on the internet and through social media.

With the advent of technology has come the rise of social media, which has provided everyone with a place to express themselves, which is beneficial to democracy. People can now use social media to not only read news items from credible sources, but also to develop and upload their own versions of the story, claiming it to be true. This has resulted in the widespread dissemination of false information in today's world. Although the Constitution guarantees our right to freely express oneself, this freedom comes with the obligation of becoming trustworthy sources of information and responsible users of information.
