Petland is one of many commercial pet stores that sell animals, such as cats and dogs. Most of the animals sold in commercial pet stores come from facilities known for cruelty to animals, and Petland's suppliers are no exception. They continue to buy their dogs from puppy mills, places where puppies are mass-produced for profit.

Puppy mills, also known as puppy farms, are institutions run by 'breeders' who breed dogs for money, basing their actions on what will benefit them and not the animals in their care.

The dogs are often contained in outdoor pens, or in tiny indoor cages far too small for them. They are forced to live here for their entire lives, denied regular exercise and play. Cages are crammed with all kinds of dogs, placed in close proximity to each other. This can lead to stress, aggression, and fighting between the dogs.

Adequate veterinary care and hygiene is not provided for the dogs, and they live in filthy, unsanitary environments. Dogs living in cages are prone to sores from standing on the wire flooring, and are in danger of cutting themselves on sharp wires. None of these injuries are treated, and even dogs who suffer much worse, such as broken bones and ingrown nails, are not checked by a veterinarian. The dogs do not receive regular health care, and most dogs have matted, unwashed fur and rotting teeth.

The dog's living areas are not cleaned, and they are forced to live among their own defecation. This encourages the spread of deadly diseases, and puppies sent from puppy mills to pet stores often have health issues.

Female dogs are treated as if they were machines, existing only for the purpose of producing puppies. They are given no breaks between litters, and are bred at every opportunity. Once they can no longer give birth, they are either killed or abandoned by workers.

Petland continues to support this cruelty by getting their puppies from puppy mills. Please sign this petition to tell them to make the compassionate decision to remove all animals from their stores.
