Australia must commit to support all International Students and Temporary Residents

There are an estimated 2.17 million temporary residents, inclusive of 575,000 student visa holders in Australia at this time, who are far from home, and we know that this can be a confusing time for them and their families.

During COVID-19, International students who are unable to support themselves financially for the next six months in Australia are encouraged to return to their home country and families. We understand however that getting home may be difficult at the moment, due to restricted flight access or borders closing in other countries - the current situation of our temporary residents are no better.

The Federal and State Government is encouraged to support these International Students and temporary residents are now reliant on paying their rents, buying groceries and University Fees from community organisations and members.

We request Australian Government to provide much needed assistance to the Australian International Students.

1        All international students and temporary residents should be entitled to rental relief for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring they are included under any schemes to protect residential tenants from eviction due to financial crisis.

2         Reduced fee structure for all International Students to for the next 2 semesters.

3     Permit International students to reschedule higher education fees for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

4       International students and temporary residents may continue to working according to the conditions listed on their visa permits, if they are still working during this difficult times.

5      Allow International students and temporary residents to defer payment of medical expenses for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We cannot deny international students and temporary residents are extremely valuable to the Australian economy and way of life. They not only pay their tax and medical expenses but also work in numerous sectors where there is a shortage of employees.

Countries like New Zealand and Canada are providing support for international students and temporary residents, we request the Australian Government to do the same.
